Shimmering is a debuff inflicted onto the player when they are submerged in Shimmer, or when the player's fishing pole's bobber touches Shimmer. Shimmering causes the player to sink through solid blocks until an open area of air or liquid big enough for the player to fit (2x3 tiles) is entered.

If no such opening is found, the player will sink until they reach the Underworld layer, where the debuff will deactivate and suffocation will occur if the player is still inside a block at this level. While the debuff is active, the player cannot move horizontally or use items, but is invincible to all damage except from that of a boss's attacks. All animations on the player character or mounts will also freeze.

This can be countered with the Chromatic Cloak, allowing the player to walk through shimmer without worrying about the debuff. Shimmering will not be applied if under the effects of a Gravitation Potion or the Gravity Globe, and the speed at which you move while Shimmering can be increased by holding a Portal Gun.

Hunger is a gameplay mechanic that is only present in Constant worlds. It is a debuff that appears immediately after world creation. It does not have actual effect at first, but will turn into a debuff that reduce the player's stats, and eventually makes the player continuously lose health if no actions are taken.

If food items are consumed while the debuff is active, it will disappear for the duration of the food buff.

At the beginning of each stage, a corresponding emote will appear.

–The first stage of Hunger is Peckish, which lasts 8 minutes.

–In the second stage, the player becomes Hungry, which lasts 8 minutes and causes the following effects:

–2 defense

–5.1% damage

–5.1% melee speed

–The final stage is Starving, during which players lose health equal to 2% of their max health per second and all positive health regen is nullified. It lasts until they consume any food item or die.

The Sparkle Slime Balloon is a Hardmode novelty consumable item. When thrown at players, enemies, and NPCs, it will inflict the Sparkle Slime debuff for 30 seconds. This debuff is only cosmetic and deals no damage.

Queen Slime always drops 25–75 balloons upon her defeat.

When thrown into Shimmer, it spawns the Diva slime pet.
