Дорога тянулась, как резиновая жила. Сначала асфальт, потом гравий, а потом началась эта ебаная грунтовка, где автобус подпрыгивает на каждой кочке, как дохлый кузнечик. За окном — поля, покосившиеся дома, заборы, какие-то сгнившие сараи. Всё это выглядит так, будто мир тут давно сдох, а люди просто не в курсе.
Я вспоминал, как в детстве было по-другому. Утро, бабка будит меня пирожками. Дед — здоровый, сильный, с топором, идёт рубить дрова. Мы вместе в саду яблоки собираем. Мне тогда казалось: ну вот он, рай на земле.

Шаги. Медленные, шаркающие. И что-то скреблось по полу. Когтями. Потом дыхание. Тяжёлое, сиплое, прямо за дверью. Я встал, приоткрыл дверь — и едва не обоссался.
В коридоре стояла бабка. Но это была не бабка.
Высокая, вытянутая, кожа серо-жёлтая, натянутая на кости, как тряпка на палке. Лицо треснутое, глаза — чёрные дыры. Улыбка без губ, один рот.
— Спи, внучек, — прошипела она. — Завтра в сад пойдём. Там урожай хороший.
Я захлопнул дверь и задвинул стул под ручку. Сел на кровать и слушал, как она ходит за дверью, шаркая ногами. Спать я так и не смог.
Я, блядь, не знаю, как вообще дожил до утра. Глаза закрывал, но спать не получалось. За дверью что-то шаркало всю ночь. Иногда слышал шёпот. Не слова, а какое-то царапанье, будто мыши скребут внутри черепа.
Когда рассвело, дверь вдруг открылась сама. Бабка стоит, улыбается.
— Внучек, пойдём в сад. Урожай хороший.
Я хотел сказать: «Да пошли вы нахуй», но язык к горлу прилип. Ноги сами пошли за ними. Мы вышли во двор. И я охуел.
Там, где раньше был сад — зелёный, пахучий, с яблонями, грушами, — теперь стоял мёртвый лес. Чёрные корявые деревья, корни наружу, земля вся перекопанная. Воздух тяжёлый, гнилой. Ни птички, ни кузнечика — мёртвая тишина.
Они подвели меня к одной яме. Земля свежая, рыхлая, видно — недавно копали.
— Дед тут работал, — сказала бабка. — Урожай богатый.
Я заглянул. И охуел так, как никогда в жизни.
В яме были руки. Настоящие. Человеческие. Бледные, местами уже гнилые. На пальцах кольца — золотые, серебряные. Из земли торчали белые кости. Их было много. Много, блядь.
— Кто это? — выдавил я.
Дед подошёл ближе, положил мне руку на плечо. Холодную, как камень из могилы.
— Наши гости, — сказал он. — Они все остаются.
И посмотрел на меня.
— Ты тоже останешься.
Я дёрнулся, попытался вырваться, но он держал, как клещами. Лицо его было близко. Я видел, что это уже не лицо. Кожа сползала, как тряпка, а под ней что-то чёрное, мокрое.
Я заорал. Изо всех сил дёрнулся и вырвался. Бросился бежать.
Бежал через этот мёртвый сад, корни хватали меня за ноги, ветки царапали лицо. Позади слышал их голоса. Но это уже не были голоса людей.
Слова растягивались, шипели, тянулись за мной, как липкая паутина:
— Внуууучееек… стой… мы ждали…
Я вылетел на дорогу, чуть не упал. Там чудом проезжала машина. Я бросился под колёса, махал руками. Водитель остановился. Я залетел внутрь, дверь захлопнул, ору:

Водитель смотрел на меня, как на психа. Но поехал.
Я обернулся. И увидел. Возле дома они стояли. Бабка и дед. Далеко, маленькие фигуры. Но я видел, как они машут мне. И улыбаются.
Я вернулся домой в город. Первые пару дней пытался убедить себя, что весь этот пиздец приснился. Усталость, нервы, хуёвая фантазия. Но стоило лечь спать — и всё начиналось.
День 1.
Я проснулся в холодном поту. Сон такой: я лежу в кровати, а в углу комнаты они стоят. Оба. Улыбаются.
Открыл глаза — пусто. Но на подоконнике грязь. Настоящая, комками. Как будто кто-то в сапогах стоял.
День 3.
Запах. Такой же, как в их доме. Сырая гниль. Соседи уже жалуются.
В подъезде дохлые воробьи. Штук пять. Я выбросил.
На следующее утро они снова лежали там. Те же самые.

Зеркало в ванной треснуло. Само.
В отражении я увидел их.
Они стояли за моей спиной.
Я развернулся — пусто.
День 9.
Звонки. Номер «неизвестный».
Я беру трубку — тишина. Потом дыхание. Тяжёлое, гнилое.
И шёпот: «Внучек…»
Я кидаю трубку, но звонок повторяется снова и снова.
День 12.
В почтовом ящике нашёл фотографию.
Я сплю.
А в углу фотографии стоят они. Улыбаются.
